I recently moved my speakers out from the wall (BW 685's) and suddenly the sound has clicked for me. I haven't looked into this massively but essentially the bass is vented out of the rear of the speakers which means that they require to be at least 50cm from the wall. I am surprised that this has made so much difference.
It really is a joy to sit back and listen to music now, instead of having it on in the background and so on.
I bought Def Leppard, Pyromania yesterday (£3) and in common with a lot of heavier rock either my system isn't doing it justice or there isn't that much there to hear. However playing Muse Origin Of Symmetry was a total revelation. Its gone in at the top of albums that demonstrate the clarity, punchiness, bass and high end sounds as my 'reference' CD.
Some albums sound different too. Dire Straits Makin' Movies (remastered) sounds more musical and melodic as opposed to a rawer 80's pop tune. It sounds better. Whether the remastering has had the main influence or more detail is being dug out, I tend to opt for the latter.
I'm picking up a little on sound stage too as the stereo effect is used to create a stage. Not sure if it is fully 3 dimensional, I will have to listen more carefully.
I'm off to hear what Wish You Were Here sounds like - esp that big zliiiiip sounds like!
